I wonder what it would be like to have your mind so set on killing others that you would be willing to kill yourself in the process. What contributes to a person's thinking process that says it is OK to make this choice? I can only guess.
From the information I glean from the media, not always the most reliable source, the perpetrators believe that it is a proper behavior to win a place in heaven. I am not an historian. I confess to being quite lazy when it comes to doing the requisite research to find the source information. Be that as it may, here are some random ideas. While they are aimed at Muslim fundamentalists, they might be applied to any fundamentalist group.
The recipe that will foster killing behaviors.
- Living in poverty.
- See no opportunity to better oneself, hopelessness.
- Discover that there are people in the world who have many more material advantages
- Be told that, according to your God, such material advantages are sinful and will drastically change your life for the worse.
- Be told that those who do live like this are sinners/unclean/enemies, etc.
- Be told that those who do live like this are better off dead
- Be told these things from your earliest memory.
- Be told that women are chattel/non-persons.
- Be told that there is a better life awaiting in heaven.
- Be told of the few ways to achieve that better life.
- Be told of the honor and glory of killing yourself as you kill others.
- Not be told if your esteemed leaders have sent their own sons to such a glorious death.
- Not be told that in your own belief system that only a few men are destined for greatness and they have already been chosen. You have to figure this out for yourself if only those men would let you.
- Be told that the family of the men in power was chosen by your God to be the leaders of your people. To question this is punishable by countless cruel means.
These are just some thoughts. Perhaps, dear readers, you have some others. I leave you to ponder these random thoughts.
Serve well! Care about those you serve! Share the love in your heart! Perhaps this is a way to move away from such behaviors.

i can't spread my arms around this subject. too personal, too many people i know are over there right now.. and i cannot grasp what it's like to want to kill so badly to prove a point.
makes me want to urp.

jack, you touch on some important points. and this is why i think the us foreign policy is wrong - the war we are waging in iraq and the israel's attack on lebanon will not help dissuade the killing behaviors. force won't do it - these behaviors are immune to force - they thrive on force.
with all respect to our soldiers and their families, here's another ingredient that contributes to killing behaviors:
being duped by your culture and your government into thinking that you are defending your country, your family.
sigh. i write the above with a heavy heart. i wish our soldiers were in a different situation.

Infinitesimal, probably, but you won't convince him, nor any other fundamentalist so imbued.
Bird, it makes my heart heavy too. Defending oneself and one's family are one thing, but defending the Right of a few to get rich any way they can is obscene. Having been on the outskirts of a "war effort", I know most of the troops get in there and do the job. They believe in what they are doing. The crime is that they most likely have been lied to. If the highest leaders were to do the war waging hand-to-hand, it would be a different story.

i almost yanked my comment - but then decided against it. i thought i'd yank it because i recall your grandsons have joined the service and i feared to insult. but i knwew you would understand what i wrote. and i hope no harm befalls them and that they continue to grow up true and strong - they have good roots.
bird, it is amazing how we can form realationships over such an impersonal device.
The fact that you made the comments you did and do are prima facie evidence of the trust we have in each other. And to think, we only know each other by the words we write. We are probably part of the same soul entity.
