Beginning tomorrow, Feb 8, my work begins. Three times a year I lead a one day post license class for new real estate licensees. The law requires the course within six months of obtaining a real estate license. The day begins with the class completing an open book test to prove what and how much they understand about the transfer of real property. The afternoon is devoted to skill building. They receive information about legal disclosure requirements, qualifying potential buyers, reviewing a completed residential sales contract, preparing estimated closing costs for buyers and sellers, and finally, reviewing a settlement statement for accuracy and completeness.
This weekend begins the first of eight two-weekend classes. Eight months of the year the Kansas Association of REALTORS® offers a principles of real estate course. Each class is conducted over two successive weekends. The class prepares the students to take the required test prior to obtaining their real estate license.
It is an absolute blast to watch folks prepare for a new career. They come to the class for a variety of reasons. Most of which lean toward more self control over their career lives. We endeavor to have some very lively discussions to help them make the transition from whatever they are doing currently to this new and exciting career.
I provide them with a variety of things that will help them in their new careers and in their private lives. They will learn a few more things than just the principles of real estate. It seems to me that a positive outlook and attitude will provide assurance to success in real estate, or any other endeavor for that matter. If they can get around the ideas of serving, caring and sharing the love in their hearts, I believe they will have a much better chance at success. So far it seems to be working. I do get emails from many of them telling me of their decisions. Not all of them get into real estate. Apparently they discover that it is not in the cards for them to be doing real estate. I hope that most of them do go on to endeavors that are personally satisfying. I want them to have a passion for doing whatever they choose to do.

These opportunities give more meaning to my life and I thank those folks who decide to have their paths cross mine. I know that I learn from each group and person in those classes. We are all teachers and students whose paths cross when we decide it is time.

i'm curious - what's the age range for the folks who take your class and the follow-up seminar (just curious about at what age people embark on new careers).

As for the real estate classes, the age range is from 18 to about 75. This range is over the past fiive years. The modal range is the late thirties to late forties. The reasons are many. They don't all go on to get their licenses which I find interesting more than baffling. I can almost always tell which ones won't go on. There have been occasions when I was surprised about who did and who didn't.
Real estate is an interesting business. Like any sales career there is a very high turnover. I try to stress service and caring as the "secrets" to success in life as well as the business.
